GANGSTER GENRE & HORROR GENRE

One of the most interesting aspects of Gangster genre in Indian cinema is its relationship with Bombay underworld (Ranjani 2007). The Gangster has always been the classic ingredient for thriller genre (Ranjani 2007). Not only that, ‘black money’ received from underworld figures has been a most important source of financing since the disdain for the popular cinema of the Indian state’s historical (Creekmur & Sidel 2007). For that reason, directors have been manipulated by gangster by put pressure on producers and actors so as to secure the profits (Creekmur & Sidel 2007).

BLOOD HISTORY (2010)

The movie was set in the Lunar Seventh Month, Chinese people believe that during this month the denizens from Hell are released for their holiday on Earth which is why they might roam around and scare people who do not follow the rules. Released in 2005, ‘The Maid’ earn its success in local box office (Gomes 2011).

Horror movies have been loved for its distinctive enjoyment it creates. This genre provides shocking moments and also it creates the pleasurable tension from not having to know what will happen next (Tudor 2002). Like most movies in horror genre, ‘The Maid’ also have usual techniques like passing shadows, creaking furniture, etc.

The story has successfully transferred to the mass, it also provides social criticism on the concern of foreign labor (Gomes 2011). Art can act as a means of providing social critique, Singapore cinema often glance of the social problems deriving the transnational position of Singapore in the middle of Western economy and Eastern culture (Gomes 2011).

THE MAID (2005)

Talking about Ram Gopal Varma, the director of Blood History, he is one of those innovative directors who make Bombay the protagonist of the movies (Reddy & Varma 2011). He has always been compared with Quentin Tarantino since both of them start their career in a video store with the dream of becoming film directors (Ahmed 2015).

They both shared share fondness for male code which is violence. Having watched ‘Blood History’, it gives me the feeling that the film is somehow being inspired by Tarantino’s Kill Bill with the killing fest.

They share similarity revenge story and the killing fest with a lot of bloody images. However, ‘Blood History’ play it bloodfest from the beginning to the end of the movie. The film also shows its close connection with Bombay underworld because it was based on a real story.

Though changing the names of characters, the movie seems to put together all the important stories in Paritala life. Yet, the narrative only focused on making him a hero and never brings up any other aspect of him.
